The U12B Hockey side started off their Epsom careers with a fantastic victory in the Lingfield tournament. The side completed five victories in their five games and did not concede a goal against tough opposition including Cranleigh, St John’s, Lingfield, Danes Hill, and then Cranleigh again in the final.
The side was superbly captained by Isabel Henderson (Hu), who marshalled the defence with crucial interceptions and excellent communication. Isla Naidoo (Hu) and Ariya Agarwal (GH) proved crucial in the team’s build-up play and never stopped running throughout the tournament, often unselfishly moving the ball on to their teammates.
In attack Lucinda Austin (Je) held the ball up superbly, allowing Epsom to maintain possession around the opposition’s area, whilst Jare Salami (GH) proved devastating with her powerful and dynamic runs from midfield. Also in the midfield, Amber Griffin (Hu) added superb technique and skill, often unlocking the opposition defence, whilst Isabella Sharp (Hu) added both goals and a great final pass to a superb all-round display.
Finally, as is often the way in tournament play, the side was indebted to the reflexes of the unbeatable Sophia Moores (Wa), who produced superb saves in open play before being the team’s hero in the successful shoot-outs in the semi-final and final.
A truly great start to the girls’ Epsom Hockey careers.
