Summer Sporting Triumphs

Pupils and staff triumphed over the summer holidays, notching up an impressive tally of sporting awards and accolades. Congratulations to those who represented their club, county and nation.

Rugby

  • Fifth Former Ella Nigrelli (Rv) represented England’s U18 Rugby team.
  • Isabel Thesiger (R) represented the England U18 Girls Touch Rugby Team that won the Gold Medal at the Junior European Championships.
  • Grace Crompton (R) represented the England U18 Girls 7s Team that went on to win the Silver Medal at the European Championships, scoring 10 tries in the process including five against Wales and one in the final against France.
  • A number of players represented the Harlequins Academy Elite Player Development Groups from U14 up to U18; Jonny Haynes (G), Tom Lynagh (F), Charley Redknapp (G), Jude Clark (G), Leo Hales (F), Max McKinlay (P), Jamie Yorke (F), Harry Addington (P), Fraser Law (Rn), Jasper Lawler (P), Lucas Schmid (Fa), Will Springett (Fa), Kit Temperley (Rn), Matthew Earle (P), Milo FitzHugh (Fa), while Rhys Day (G) represented the London Irish Academy.

Athletics

  • Adahna Ekoku (OE) competed in the English Schools Championship, while Farrah Stephens-Martin (M) and Solomon Ekoku (Fa) were selected for Surrey Schools.
  • Athletics Coach, Jacob Paul secured the British Champion trophy in the 400m hurdles.

Hockey

  • Olivia Wilde (R) won the National Premier League title with Holcombe HC.
  • Tassy Williams (R) was a finalist with the Saxon Tigers in the U18 Girls England Hockey Futures Cup and selected for the regional team.
  • Delphine Ayitey-Hammond (Rv) is part of the Regional Performance Centre while Gina Carrington (Wa), Alex Nienow (R), Gina Liebenberg (Rv) and Amelia Burke (Rv) are also Surrey players.
  • Head of Lower School Activities, Sarah Cockayne, represented the England Masters O35 Women’s Hockey Team in the European Championships.The team didn’t lose a single game and secured the Gold medal, with Sarah as joint top scorer for the England side.

Golf

  • Canice Screene (OE) finished in the top 30 in the English Womens’ Open Amateur tournament, captained Surrey Juniors and won the U18 South Regional Scratch Championship.
  • Oscar Lent (Wa) won the County Singles U18 Handicap trophy and the County U13 and U14 trophies.

Cricket

  • Nine pupils played cricket at county level for Surrey: Ben Berry (GH), Will Swan (C), Aarav Rajnikanth (Fa), Ben Garrett (G), Harry Jackson (P), Ella Clinton (Cr), Edie McLennan Fordyce (GH), Maddie O’Brien (GH) and Lucy Stephens (Hu).

Netball

  • Ebube Akojie (Wh) represented Surrey Storm U21.
  • Ellie Thwaites (M) represented the Surrey Storm Regional Academy.
  • Several pupils were selected for Surrey U13s – Freya Johnson (Wh), Amelia Burke (Rv), Gabby Sesay (M), Eva Sesay (M) and Amy Henwood (Wh).
  • Head of Netball, Mrs Beverley Bostock, coached the Surrey Storm U15s who won the Silver Medal at the England Netball Performance Competition. The competition was for the top U15 netballers in the Country and comprised 12 teams from around the country.

Football

  • Callum Holland (OE) captained the ISFA national U18 Side and received a football scholarship to Furman University in the USA.
  • Jaami Qureshi (P), Luke Campbell (F) and Farrah Stephens-Martin (M) have all also had national representation in the past year.

Shooting

The Schools’ Meeting saw 21 pupils representing Epsom and while the Ashburton VIII finished 7th with a young squad, seven shooters were selected for the top 100 out of over 600 cadets. For the first time since 2009 the young shooters attained major trophies.

  • Tilly White (R) and Tom Glynne-Percy (G) shot superbly to win the Cadet Pair shield, and these two were joined by Arthur van Grondelle (C) and Thomas Booth (Rn) in winning the Cadet Fours Cup. These victories place Epsom’s U16 shooters as National Champions.
  • Additionally, two of last year’s leavers attained individual success – Molly Message (M) was selected as Captain of the UK Cadet Rifle Team for a long range match against a cadet team from Canada, as well as the regular Army, RAF and Navy Inter-Services match.
  • Max Palmer (G) was selected to shoot for the UK Cadets in the short-range match.
  • Two current pupils also achieved great success this summer: Elina Smith toured Jersey with the UK Cadet Rifle Team having passed selection for the twelve-strong team in April.
  • In August, Epsom captain Maddie Luckyn-Malone toured Canada with the British Cadet Rifle Team and was appointed as a coach of the team for the major matches against the Canadian cadets, which the British team won.

Squash

  • Ben Harris (OE) was runner up in the Surrey County Junior Championships.

Riding

  • Maddie Schaible (Cr) has qualified for the prestigious Horse of the Year competition, which takes place in October. She won the qualifier at Scotland’s Royal Highland Centre, impressing the judges with her style and conformation of her pony, Spangle.
