The Senior Rugby 7s squad got their season off to a flying start, winning the Cup at the Seaford College 7s. With a number of key players unavailable as they were representing Harlequins Academy, it provided an opportunity for the wider squad to get some valuable pitch time, which also included three U16s; Rhys Day (G), Charley Redknapp (G) and Max Franks (H).
A convincing win in the opening game against RGS Worcester (26-7) was followed up by a remarkable second half comeback against Portsmouth Grammar School, winning 28-19 having trailed 0-19 at half time.
A 25-0 win over Sevenoaks in the final pool game set up a Cup semi-final against holders Dulwich College, who had defeated Epsom in last year’s final.
Two tries by Thomas Wearne (G) and one from George Addington (Rn) sealed a 17-12 win that saw Epsom progress through to the final for the second year in succession.
In the other semi-final, Gordon’s School just edged Bishop’s Wordsworth 19-17. The final turned out to be a very tight affair. In worsening conditions, Epsom’s willingness to play an expansive game was rewarded when Nilesh Raghavan (P) finished off a flowing move to go over for what turned out to be the decisive score of the game. Epsom then had to withstand some late pressure from Gordon’s but held on to secure victory and win the Cup for the very first time.
This victory is a great start to the 7s season, the style of play throughout the day was excellent and the experience gained in winning this tournament will prove invaluable to this group of players.
The signs look encouraging for another successful season and the team looks forward to their next tournament: the South Coast 7s at Portsmouth Grammar.
