On Monday evening Canon Paul Thompson, Senior Chaplain, led a service of Advent Compline in the College Chapel. Mr Luke Fisher had assembled some of the senior members of the Chapel Choir to sing the plainsong that is a notable feature of this service.
Compline is an ancient monastic service to conclude the working day, offering reflection and stillness in a service sung almost entirely to medieval plainchant.
The service began with the ancient hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel, and included the Advent Prose, some of the most beautiful plainchant music ever composed.
Chapel was in candlelight as the service unfolded. Advent marking the four weeks of Christian preparation in readiness for the Christmas season itself.
There was a healthy congregation of parents, members of Common Room, and also a sizeable proportion from the pupil body as well.
It was a most fitting way to usher in the season, and many commented on the beauty and serenity of the service in Chapel.
