Oscar’s Remarkable Run at the Sunningdale Foursomes

Upper Sixth student, Oscar, and his golfing partner Monty, gave a stunning performance at the prestigious Sunningdale Foursomes Tournament last week

Curtain Raiser of the Golfing Season

The Sunningdale Foursomes is a unique tournament that was first played in 1934 with just 46 pairs. Often seen as the curtain raiser of the golfing season in Europe, the Sunningdale Foursomes is played over both the Old & New Courses in early March.

Entries for the event are limited to 128 pairs, with entrants required to demonstrate a strong record of recent golfing achievements to qualify. Each year, the tournament attracts a mix of PGA and European Tour professionals, former Ryder Cup and Walker Cup players, as well as major champions. The Foursomes format is open to amateurs and professionals, both male and female, with any combination of pairings permitted. Though players are handicapped, all compete from the same tees and par.

126 Golf Holes Played in Four Days

The 91st edition of the Sunningdale Foursomes proved to be yet another memorable chapter in the tournament’s rich history. A number of notable names graced the event, drawing large crowds throughout the week.

Oscar and Monty’s journey to the final was nothing short of extraordinary. Over four days, they played an astounding 126 holes, facing off against both male and female professionals as well as talented amateurs. Among the players they defeated, were European Tour veterans like Robert Rock, ex-Walker Cup player Angus Flanagan, and current European Tour player Hugh Foley.

Oscar and Monty’s journey to the final included a remarkable victory over professionals Harry Walch and Angus Flanagan in the semi-finals. Their performance in the final was equally impressive, as they held a two-shot lead on the 15th hole, thanks to Oscar’s consistent iron play. However, despite their strong position, they were met with a dramatic comeback from opponents David Corben and Harry Crockett. A bogey on the 17th and a missed putt on the 18th ultimately led to a narrow defeat, but this in no way diminishes the brilliance of their overall performance.

Praise for Their Outstanding Performance

Ben MacDowel, Head of Golf, commented on their exceptional teamwork and impressive standard of play, “A truly extraordinary performance from two relatively young golfers. Their teamwork was exceptional, and the level of play was outstanding.”

Oscar’s dedication, composure, and resilience were evident throughout the tournament. Propert Housemaster, Alex Buhagiar, also praised his performance, stating, “Oscar’s dedication, sportsmanship, and golfing ability were clear from the start. He has certainly made Propert and the wider Epsom community incredibly proud.”

Oscar and Monty’s journey this year has made them stronger golfers, and they are already looking ahead to next year. With their determination to improve, they’ll return to Sunningdale with the goal of going one better in 2026.
