This year, the OE squash players are once again competing in the Londonderry Cup, a prestigious competition involving alumni from the country’s top squash schools.
Last week, the OE team faced the Old Merchant Taylors’ in the quarter-finals at the Hurlingham Club. The OEs were full of confidence after knocking out the Old Millfieldians in the previous round.
First on court, young OE and recent College captain, Ben Harris, took on the Old Merchant Taylors’ captain. A composed display from Ben secured a comfortable 3-0 victory.
On the next court, Tim Abbott faced a tougher contest but came through with a 3-1 victory.
Martin Snow’s match then kicked off with some good rallies, but Martin was typically unfazed on court, had the measure of his opponent, and won in straight games.
To cap off a great evening of squash, David Main took to the court – despite his opponent turning up late and walking straight onto court, it quickly became apparent that he was an extremely high-level player, who at one stage had been pushing for a world ranking.
In a fascinating encounter, David matched his opponent with accurate hitting and lung-busting rallies, but his opponent eventually managed to secure a consolation victory for the Old Merchant Taylors’. The opposition forfeited the final match, as they were one player short.
Epsom emerged 4-1 victors and now await the draw for the semi-finals.
