The scholarship, designed to inspire students to pursue their dreams and change the world as future leaders in engineering, provides worthwhile benefits to the scholars who receive the sought-after prize. This includes mentoring, access to exclusive events and hands-on work experience, and financial assistance.
Oliver, who found out that he received the scholarship last week, said: “I was elated when I got the news. I was not expecting to receive the scholarship as it is very competitive. At a young age, I was really interested in superstructures such as large bridges and vast buildings, which inspired me to want to go into civil engineering. I care greatly about the environment and I believe civil engineers can have a large impact on the sustainability of our future.
“I have loved being part of the College’s STEM racing team and I am studying Further Mathematics, Physics and Design Technology with the hope to study Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cambridge or Imperial College London. I am looking forward to making the most of the opportunities on offer to me through the Arkwright Scholarship and to develop my skills as an engineer further.”
Applicants need to have an established interest and commitment to engineering and be able to demonstrate evidence of undertaking STEM-related projects as part of the rigorous application process. Last year, eight Year 11 pupils applied for the scholarship, sitting the two-hour exam paper and five were called to interview. Within the group who applied from Epsom, the pupils were interested in studying a range of engineering courses at university, from Civil, Automotive, Chemical and Design Engineering to Architecture.
2023 applications open on Monday 10 October. If any aspiring engineers in Year 11 are interested in applying this year, please contact Miss Wickham.
