The CCF Lower Sixth Leadership Cadre travelled to Tonbridge to valiantly exchange dry land for open top canoes, and while the weather was mostly glorious, waterproofs proved invaluable for the occasional shower that rolled across the Medway.
The 14km paddle gave opportunities to test stamina, fitness, teamwork and morale, as well as allowing us all to get back to nature, and enjoy the peace and quiet that this beautiful environment provides.
With the varying water levels along the stretch, we were able to try out several of the canoe chutes on the route, but also practised the skill of portaging, as we had to negotiate locks with no through flow and had to carry our canoes down to the lower level, with all the test of communication that such an exercise entails.
The group managed the challenges of the day well, particularly in the face of top-to-toe-dunkings in the river for several when canoe-balance went awry; the collaborative effort to get to the end safely together was impressive. It also marks the final phase of practical credits for their BTEC Level 2 qualification, so a hugely successful trip all round.
