The overwhelming generosity of parents, pupils and staff at the Upper Sixth Leavers’ ball in June has resulted in a cheque for £12,500 being presented to the charity Papyrus.
Papyrus is the only national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide. The charity was formed 22 years ago by a group of parents who all had experience of bereavement by suicide or who were supporting a young person living with suicidal thoughts.
Suicide is the single biggest killer of young people in the UK today. According to the Office of National Statistics, in this country last year over 1,800 young people took their own lives, which equates to five people every single day.
“It was tremendous to see the manner in which the whole year group, parents and staff rallied round to raise such a large amount of money for this charity,” said Paul Williams. “We are delighted to be able to support such a worthy cause.”
