Epsom’s Kris Kim has become the talk of the PGA following an outstanding first-day performance. Displaying nerves of steel and a confidence way beyond his 16 years, Kris shot three under par in the first round of the PGA Golf tour event the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. The performance puts him in 25th place and in a good position to make the cut.
Kris, who is at the PGA at the invite of the sponsors, posted five birdies and four bogeys before rounding off a memorable opening day with an audacious chip-in eagle on his final hole.
“I thought it was pretty fun today,” Kim said, at the press conference later. “Made a lot of birdies, but couple bogeys in there as well. I think overall I played really well.
“They [nerves] were pretty high [at the first] to be honest,” Kris added, “but it helped that I got a good drive away and pretty good second shot in as well.”
Mark Roe, Sky Sport’s golfing analyst, was in awe of Kris’s debut performance.
Mark said: “He came here with a lot of people heralding his talent, following the Junior Ryder Cup, but the way he’s performed today is more than admirable. It’s been an absolute joy to watch him, he’s got a great demeanour on the course and he’s playing stunning, stunning stuff. Take a bow young man, because this is a special talent we’re watching. This is the PGA Tour, it’s a huge stage. You don’t see 16-year-olds who are that calm normally – he looks like he’s born to do this.”
