Six Epsom golfers had a match to remember this week, against Cranleigh on the Epsom Downs Course. Not only did they beat the rain but they also managed to beat Cranleigh. The Epsom team comprised five golfers from Middle Fourth – Captain Will Hewett (H), Sophie Norman (Wh), Thea Haigh (R), Harry Boxer (G) and Dylan Dhanani (C) – and one, Sebastian Ward (P), from Upper Fourth.
For three of them (Dylan, Harry and Seb) it was their first competitive golf match for Epsom and they all did remarkably well.
Over the past year, their golf games have really developed and this was the culmination of the many lessons given to them by Adam on Friday afternoons.
They attend religiously and through the months have improved so much, to the extent that they are able to be competitive over eight holes. This was unthinkable nine months ago.
The boys were captained by William Hewett, who led by example by birding the first hole. His game remained solid and over eight holes was four over par.
Not wanting to be outdone, Sophie and Thea played in the next two pairs and also played extremely well. In the end, the combined stableford points could not have been closer: Epsom 70pts, Cranleigh 69pts.
The match was played in great spirit and all golfers gained so much from the experience. A sincere thank you to Epsom Downs Golf Course for hosting the match and Adam for his patience and professionalism.
