Inter-House Choral Competition Delights Packed Audience

Following weeks of rehearsals that have filled the College with music, yesterday’s annual Inter-House Choral Competition was hotly anticipated and didn't disappoint

The Choral Competition has always been a highlight of the year as one of the longest-standing events in the College calendar. It represents both the strong tradition of singing at the College, as well as forming solid bonds within the houses and bringing the wider College community together to celebrate the talent and dedication of our pupils.

The audience of parents, staff and fellow pupils packed into the Sports Hall and were thoroughly entertained by an array of moving, funny and often outstanding pupil performances from the 13 houses.

Solo, Part Song and Unison

Each house took it in turn to present a solo performance, an unaccompanied part song and a unison performance featuring the combined talents of the entire house. Every unison performance was conducted by a senior pupil, and each house chose and arranged its own song, choreography, costumes and props.

Every house did a fantastic job, but this year Rosebery deservedly took home the trophy as the overall winner.

We thank this year’s judge, Lucy Mitchell, a former Epsom College Music Scholar and Chapel Choir Prefect. Lucy is a sound editor for TV and film, her credits include Lord of the Rings – Ring of Power, Boiling Point, Derry Girls and Top Gear. She is also a BAFTA TV Judge.

Director of Music, Mr Paul Johnson-Hyde, said: “This year was a highlight for me. During the rehearsal process, I was delighted to see 100% participation from each and every member of the houses and there was an impressively high standard of singing on display. But perhaps more than this, the Choral Competition epitomises the house spirit here at Epsom, which shines through in the collaboration and support between older and younger years.”
