On Wednesday 3 March, Ellie Jordan (M) and Max McKinlay (P) represented the College at the Year 12 South (Central/East) Region French Debating Competition, organised by Charterhouse.
17 teams participated in the competition, arguing for and against two motions over the course of the evening: “The benefits of volunteering are an illusion” and “Men and women will never be equal”.
Max and Ellie’s rhetorical skills saw them through both the group round and the quarter-finals, only to be narrowly defeated by a strong team from King Edward VI School in the semi-final. Both Ellie and Max were praised by the judges for the quality of their arguments, their use of French and their exemplary conduct, both during the debates and by being the only non-competing pupils stay on and watch the final.
