The Epsom College community was delighted to welcome Mr Andrew Castle, former UK no.1 tennis player, to speak as our first Lord Rosebery lecture of the year.
Mr Castle spoke with flair and charm to a rapt audience of 170 parents and pupils, many of whom are keen tennis players themselves.
He highlighted his favourite career moments, illustrating tense moments on the court by throwing a tennis ball into the audience, ultimately caught by Head of School, Elizabeth Phizackerley (Cr).
On a serious note, Andrew left our pupils with a key life lesson from sport: “Sport is about losing.”
A most amusing closing anecdote was his favourite dance on Strictly Come Dancing, the American Smooth, which, as he demonstrated, did not go quite as smoothly as he’d hoped.
Overall, it proved to be a convivial evening full of laughter and reflection.
