ESCA National T20 Cup Quarter-Final (Surrey)

Ben Garrett (G), captain, won the toss for Epsom on a glorious day at Trinity School in what would be a crucial choice of action.

Garrett selected to bat first on a flat looking surface. Epsom’s batters approached the crease with purpose each time and attempted to score at a run-a-ball. Oliver King (Rn) opened with Garrett, lasting 14 balls and scoring 10 runs before being caught and bowled. Garret was bowled for seven, which precipitated a short collapse until Louis Russell (C) had an opportunity to steady the ship with Codey Hall (F). Both players hit the ball with aplomb and nudged Epsom nearer the hundred mark. Russell was caught at deep midwicket for 13 before Hall was bowled for 21. Enter George Bustard (Rn) and Jamie Taylor (P). Both players accelerated the run-rate against a good seam attack, chopping the ball nicely to point, cover and long off. Their partnership reached 43 before Epsom ran out of overs, Bustard 22 off 30 balls and Taylor 13 off 20. Epsom finished on 123-6.

A quick turn-around led to Epsom bowling with determination to defend their score. AJ Hughes (Fa) bowled a good line and length with swing to frustrate Trinity’s opening batsmen. Jamie Taylor (P) took a chance run-out at mid-on to spark what turned out to be a complete performance for the Epsom XI. Oliver King (Rn) bowled accurately and removed the other opening batsman before Stanley Tanguy (G) and U14 player Harry Jackson (P) had the opportunity to bowl their spin, Jackson taking 2-15 runs off four overs and Tanguy taking 3-9 off his four overs, a superb effort from both to pile on the pressure. Middle Fourth Luka Woods (Fa) stepped up to bowl in the dying moments of the game to take two well-worked wickets and effectively win the game for Epsom, his figures 2-21 off three overs. Epsom stroll on to the semi-final.
