Epsom’s F24 Team Secure Top Ten Finish at International Final

Last weekend, 15 Sixth Form students from Epsom's STEM Racing Team ventured to Goodwood for Greenpower Racing’s 25th International Final.

Over the course of the season, the team have taken part in races at three different tracks in two categories (F24 for 11-16-year-olds and F24+ for 16-24-year-olds), competing against over 150 other cars from across Europe.

The team qualified for the F24+ final in their car, EC Racer. This event saw the top 45 kit- and scratch-built cars race for the chance to be crowned the 2024 Champion. Epsom’s team has continued to develop the car – making changes to the aerodynamics, bearings, bodywork, gearing, electronics and weight distribution.

Once the car had passed scrutineering and the team completed the drivers’ briefing, the car took to the track for the hour-long practice session. This allowed the team to test the new bearings, gearing and rear axle, in the hope of improving its pace and endurance. The lap times looked positive and the car ran well.

After a change of batteries, Zoe Moir took to the grid ready for the F24+ race. A good start saw Epsom lap well with Zoe’s smooth driving. Quintus Hui was on comms and guided Zoe well, telling her when she could increase pace by changing the car’s settings in order to lap faster.

The car performed well, beating the previous best lap time at the circuit by over 30 seconds. This also meant the car increased its total distance by over three miles. Heading into the final lap, Zoe gained three places to steer the team to finish 9th in class and 24th overall. This was a brilliant end to the season and demonstrated the progress made by the team.

Zoe managed to gain three places to see the team finish a fantastic 9th in class and 24th overall

The end of the season sees several of the Upper Sixth leave the team as they will not be able to race in the 2025 season. Special mentions to Tom Stapley and Zac Power who have been members since Year 10 and contributed so much, as well as mentoring younger pupils.

Thank you to Dr Telfer-Mason and Mr Chiba for supporting the team over the long season and giving up their Sundays for the races. Also, thank you to Mick Day for driving the team to the races.
