Epsom Named ‘Best Delegation’ at Model United Nations Conference

Epsom’s team of 14 delegates had an unforgettable experience at Reigate Grammar School's Model United Nations (MUN) conference, where they represented the nations of South Korea and Guyana. Upper Sixth student James Mathews, shares his experience of the day.

The day was a whirlwind of high-stakes diplomacy, filled with engaging debates, sharp negotiations, and collaborative problem-solving sessions. From discussions on the global protection of aid workers to the task of preserving endangered minority languages, delegates tackled a wide range of pressing international issues with skill and poise.

The day was productive for all delegates in attendance, with Epsom delegates John Gartside, Belle English, James Mathews and Isla MacGregor Watson all successfully passing resolutions to help solve the issues being debated.

Our students secured four individual awards, including two prestigious Best Delegate prizes

Epsom’s team brought their A-game, with both experienced and first-time delegates stepping up to the challenge. Their hard work and skills – learnt throughout the years – truly paid off, as they secured four individual awards, including two prestigious Best Delegate prizes. James Mathews and Belle English were awarded Best Delegate, Cedric Lee was a Highly Commended Delegate and John Gartside a Commended Delegate. These awards are issued to those who engage the most within each committee, and reflect the high-quality debate brought by Epsom’s delegates.

In the General Assembly, a resolution written by South Korea regarding the global management of genocide was selected for debate. Following a passionate and persuasive speech by James Mathews, many points of information were fielded that resulted in the resolution being passed. Due to the performance of South Korea in this event, and the large number of other awards won, Epsom was named Best Delegation, a testament to the team’s collective strength, preparation, and passion for global affairs.

The atmosphere at the conference was electric, with every committee buzzing with energy as delegates defended their country’s interests while also seeking common ground with others. The Epsom team demonstrated knowledge of the issues at hand and showcased their ability to think on their feet and engage in diplomatic strategies.

Congratulations to all who participated in making this event a resounding success. The team’s remarkable performance was a fitting reward for their dedication, teamwork, and enthusiasm for international diplomacy. With South Korea (comprised of James Mathews, Isla MacGregor Watson, John Gartside, Dejan Filipas, Daniel Clatworthy, Belle English and Cedric Lee) winning the entire conference, it was the perfect way to cap off a day filled with personal and group triumphs, making this MUN experience one to remember for all involved.

The team hopes to replicate this success at their next conference in November at RGS Guildford.
