Epsom College Student Chosen as UK Youth Duke of Edinburgh Ambassador

Upper Sixth student Kalina Hristova, a committed Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) participant and youth leader at Epsom, has been chosen for the prestigious UK Youth DofE Ambassador Programme

Each year just 35 young people across the UK are selected for the DofE Ambassador programme. Kalina’s selection reflects the outstanding dedication, leadership, and enthusiasm she has shown while taking part in her DofE Award.

As a UK Youth DofE Ambassador, Kalina will represent and advocate the DofE programme on a national level. Ambassadors get involved in a range of activities, including: participating in workshops, contributing ideas, speaking at DofE events, and addressing key social challenges affecting their generation. They also provide feedback on the Award’s structure, helping to inspire and empower other young people to embark on their own DofE adventure.

Kalina’s Inspiring DofE Journey

Originally from Bulgaria, Kalina has lived in the UK for the past ten years. She credits the DofE with helping her build friendships and integrate socially. She began her DofE experience at the Silver level when joining Epsom College, viewing it as an opportunity to develop new friendships beyond the classroom.

“Starting a new school in Year 10 was quite daunting, so I signed up for the DofE award to make new friends and learn new skills. I’m so glad I did – some of my closest friends have come from doing the DofE, and it gave me the chance to dedicate my time to achieving something meaningful,” Kalina said.

For her Volunteering section, Kalina coached netball at Epsom College: planning sessions, running drills, and creating engaging activities for younger pupils. This not only boosted their skills but also strengthened Kalina’s communication and leadership abilities.

In the Physical section, she joined a gym and focused on weightlifting. “It was intimidating at first, especially since it’s often a male-dominated space, but the more I progressed, the more confident I became,” Kalina said.

For the Residential section, she attended a three-week leadership programme in Pennsylvania, USA, called Leadership in the Business World. This sparked her interest in studying Economics or Finance at university. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “DofE has been so much fun, and it’s so much more than just the Expedition. Becoming a Youth Ambassador allows me to apply the skills I’ve gained from the award, to the real world.”

Kalina’s Gold Volunteering section saw her take on the role of DofE Ambassador at Epsom College, supporting Bronze and Silver participants, organising expeditions, and teaching essential skills like map reading and meal planning.

Beyond her formal DofE activities, Kalina completed the Vitality London 10K race, raising crucial funds for the DofE charity. Her goal was to expand access to the programme, particularly for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to take part. “Before DofE, I wasn’t a runner. But all the effort I put into my Physical section, gave me the confidence to complete this challenge,” she said.

Empowering Young Leaders

Funded by The Gosling Foundation, the UK Youth Ambassador Programme empowers young people to influence and shape the DofE’s work. Ambassadors meet with policymakers, speak at major events, represent the DofE internationally, and play an active role in the charity’s decision-making processes.

Ashley Williams, UK Youth Engagement Manager at The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, praised Kalina’s achievements, saying: “Kalina is an incredible example of what young people can accomplish through the DofE. As a charity, we are committed to giving young people a voice and the opportunity to make a positive impact on the issues they care about.”

Kalina’s achievements “illustrate the transformative power of the DofE programme. From coaching and fitness challenges to leadership and advocacy, she has demonstrated remarkable dedication to personal growth and community impact,” said Henry Hampton-Carr, Head of DofE at Epsom College. Her journey serves as an inspiration for other young people to embark on their own DofE adventure and unlock their potential.
