Epsom Claims Hat-trick of TES Award Nominations

Epsom College has received an outstanding hat-trick of nominations in this year’s Times Education Supplement’s (TES) Independent School Awards.

The awards are viewed as the Oscars of education awards, rewarding excellence and innovation in the Independent Schools sector. In recognition of another outstanding year for the College, Epsom has been nominated for:

  • Senior Leadership Team of the Year
  • Whole School Community Initiative of the Year
  • Wellbeing Initiative of the Year

“Independent education in this country is truly world class. It’s one of our great success stories. Those shortlisted for the TES Independent School Awards are the crème de la crème.”

TES Editor, Ann Mroz

Ms Mroz added: “We received a record number of entries this year and the standard is the highest yet, so to be shortlisted is an extraordinary achievement for any school.”

Capping off an impressive term

The nominations round off a strong Michaelmas Term at Epsom which saw the College post record GCSE and A-level results and receive national recognition in The Week, for being among the ‘Best of the Best’ schools in the UK for its co-curricular provision.

“Great schools are built around teams of talented people rather than individuals, we are fortunate at Epsom to have assembled a talented Senior Leadership Team who are devoted to the College and eager to continue to contribute to the school’s exciting advancement. The TES Awards acknowledgement is timely and gratifying,” said Jay Piggot, Headmaster.

“Similarly, to be shortlisted in the School Community and Wellbeing Initiatives highlights the excellent work undertaken by students and staff across an impressive range of important areas of school life.”

The winners will be revealed at a gala awards evening at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on Friday 1 February 2019. Details of the nominations can be found below.

Senior Leadership Team of the Year

Epsom’s nomination for Senior Leadership Team of the Year is in recognition of the significant advancements made to the curriculum, pastoral provision and academic outcomes in recent years.

Initiatives such as the Cultural Hour, our programme of academic enrichment and data-driven reporting have helped to propel Epsom up the league tables and have given pupils every chance of success and fulfilment.

This, alongside the school’s outstanding pastoral care, the launch of the Lower School and significant investments to the School’s infrastructure helped to cement Epsom’s place on the shortlist.

Whole School Community Initiative of the Year

Epsom was founded on the principles of benevolence and excellence, and these qualities find their modern-day expression in our Service Programme – where our pupils volunteer to provide support, mentoring and leadership in the local community.

TES judges were impressed by the scale of the programme – which has seen 260 Sixth Form students, in over 35 different placements, volunteering over 10,000 hours. Additionally, an aspect that helped Epsom to be shortlisted for this award is that the service programme is a timetabled activity, demonstrating how seriously the College views this initiative.

Wellbeing Initiative of the Year

The third and final nomination for this year’s TES Awards recognises Epsom’s outstanding approach to pupil welfare.

From the structured, whole-school approach to PSD to peer mentoring and wider pastoral provision, judges felt Epsom’s dedication to its pupils’ wellbeing to be among the best in class.

Our place on the shortlist was secured through our commitment to sharing knowledge and disseminating best practice with parents, local schools and members of the Boarding Schools Association.
