Dr JAMES HEDLEY VISICK Holman – 1950-1955

By his wife, Kirsty Visick

It is with regret that I announce the passing of my husband on 7th September 2024, aged 87.

James was in Holman House from 1950 to 1955 and then went to Bart’s hospital to train to be a doctor, as did his older brother and father.

His father, Arthur Hedley Visick, had attended Epsom College from 1909 to 1915 and became a celebrated surgeon in York. He died suddenly when James was 12 years old and so James went to Epsom on a medical bursary for sons of deceased doctors.

James subsequently became a consultant Radiologist in Norwich. He married Angela in 1961 and they had two children, Mark and Helen.  This marriage ended in 1985.

I met James when I joined the Norwich Philharmonic Choir. I came to Norwich to join a partnership in General Practice, so we were both qualified doctors. We married in 1993 and together had one son, William.

James retired in 1997 and, living in open countryside, he pursued his passion for Astronomy (taking a GCSE and an advanced course in Astronomy) and buying several telescopes! He loved the countryside, watching and feeding the birds and walking. We usually took our holidays in this country so we would walk in the Lake District, the North York Moors, the Cotswolds and Cornwall. We both continued to sing with the Norwich Philharmonic Chorus and enjoyed attending concerts in Norwich and going to London for Opera and Ballet.

James’ funeral was a beautiful occasion with 25 members of the Norwich Philharmonic Chorus singing. He was very proud of his children’s achievements but more importantly that they became kind and hardworking people.
