Co-Curricular Diaries – Contemporary Dance

As a leading school for all-rounders, our pupils enjoy a huge array of clubs, societies and activities. Our new weekly feature, Co-Curricular Diaries, shines a light on some of the opportunities on offer, kicking off this week with Contemporary Dance

Lauren, Sarnya and Jess tell us about their Contemporary Dance activity which takes place every Thursday afternoon.

Q: What inspired you to choose Contemporary Dance, and how long have you doing it?
Lauren: I’ve always loved dancing in my free time, and contemporary is one of my favourite styles because it’s so expressive. I started this activity back in September and have enjoyed every session since.

Sarnya: I have a passion for dance and I think it is great that the school allows me to pursue that ambition along with my academic studies.

Jess: I chose to do Contemporary Dance because I did dance before but then gave it up and it was great to find this passion again.

Q: What does a typical session look like?
Lauren: Each session begins with a warm-up to get us moving, followed by exercises to improve our technique. Then, we focus on learning and refining a routine, which we work on for several weeks. We always finish with stretching and a cool-down to wrap up.

Q: What’s your favourite part of the activity?
Lauren: Learning the routines is definitely my favourite part. I love seeing how it all comes together over time. The choreography is really expressive and lyrical, which makes it so enjoyable to perform. One of my favourite routines is set to Beautiful Things by Benson Boone.

Sarnya: I enjoy how diverse the club is with the different year groups. I don’t think I would have had the opportunity to meet any of the other girls outside of dance and they are all so lovely.

Jess: The thing I enjoy most is the feeling you get after you have completed your dance.

Q: Why would you recommend Contemporary Dance to others?
Lauren: Contemporary Dance is something anyone can enjoy, regardless of their experience level. The choreography can be adapted for beginners or advanced dancers, so it’s really inclusive. Plus, it’s fantastic for both your physical and mental health. And above all, it’s so much fun!
