Rehearsals for The Government Inspector commenced at the beginning of Michaelmas term and, eight weeks of hard work later, the 20 cast and crew members and ready to unveil their revival of Gogol’s timeless text next week.
The students, from Upper Fourth through to Upper Sixth, led by Director Rob Wells, Assistant Head of Drama, will transport the audience to Russia in 1836. Big School will be transformed into an authentic and tasteful Russian palace interior as pupils, adorned in grand Russian tunics and peasant outfits, bring the story to life.
Despite being almost 200 years old, the play’s themes are timeless – all-encompassing human greed and political corruption are as relevant now as they were when the play was first performed.
Although the themes of power and corruption are dark, the cast will skilfully weave in comedic and slapstick elements, guaranteed to cheer you up on a cold December evening.
