The Ensembles Concert was a captivating showcase of musical excellence, spotlighting the talents of our students. The Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Mr Freddy Wickham, opened with particularly impressive performances featuring two outstanding soloists.
Ella Stephens delivered a hauntingly beautiful rendition of the first movement of Vaughan Williams’ Oboe Concerto. Justin Pang then took the stage with Elgar’s hugely popular Cello Concerto, showcasing his exceptional skill and musicality.
The Concert Band, under the direction of Mr Paul Johnson-Hyde, offered a diverse repertoire, including Michael Sweeney’s Across the Northern Sky and selections from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Encanto, arranged by Paul Murtha.
The ‘Get Downs’ Funk Band, led by Mr A Hooley, infused the evening with energy through a medley of dance classics. The Acapella group gave a soulful rendition of Cups (When I’m Gone) and the Barbershop Chorus gave an amusing performance of Mr Wickham’s arrangement of I’m Just Ken.
The evening concluded with the Big Band, directed by Mr Sam Walker, featured Big Band classics such as Strike Up The Band and Golden Striker by Count Basie.
This concert celebrated the flourishing instrumental tradition of the Music Department as well as the dedication and passion of our talented students and staff.
