In January we were delighted to take delivery of a grand piano, which has been situated in the Mermaid Lecture Theatre. This new addition to our Music department’s resources will enable us to host events, recitals and small concerts in this arena.
Our first event was held on Wednesday 26th March, during which our pupils performed alongside professional concert pianist, Kausikan Rajeshkumar.
Kausikan Rajeshkumar has performed extensively across the UK and abroad, including at the Royal Festival Hall, Wigmore Hall and Queen Elizabeth Hall, and has been broadcast on BBC television and radio.
In 2009, he won the Weimar International Franz Liszt Competition for Young Pianists and went on to enjoy success in many other competitions, including the Parnassos International Piano Competition, the Maria Herrero International Piano Competition, the Darmstadt International Chopin Piano Competition and the Royal Overseas League Music Competition.
Following the pupils’ recitals, Kausikan Rajeshkumar took to the piano, playing:
L’Isle Joyeuse L.106 Debussy
Prelude in D major, Op.23 No.4 – Rachmaninoff
Prelude in G minor, Op.23 No.5 – Rachmaninoff
Sonata No.3 in B minor, Op.58, 4th mvt ‘Presto ma non tanto’ – Chopin
He then treated the audience to a wonderful improvised medley of guest requests, including ‘Defying Gravity’, ‘Star Wars’, ‘Oh Danny Boy’ & ‘Doctor Who’
We took the opportunity at this inaugural concert to thank those who came forward to collectively fund the piano and celebrate this great gift to Epsom College.
