On a glorious late January afternoon, the 2nd XI scored a last-minute goal to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and progress to the Quarter Final of the ISFA London Schools Cup.
Epsom started on the back foot in a game of two very different halves. During the first half, Dulwich had the majority of possession and attacked with enthusiasm, only to be met by the wall of Epsom defence, in the shape of Zac Middleton (G), Nikolai Marinov (H) and Ross Thurtell (P) – all of whom are building a superb relationship as a reliable back three. The team absorbed the pressure until a well-organised attack from Dulwich found the back of the net. The game went to half time with Epsom seemingly losing control of the game.
An adjustment in tactics and a focus on two problem areas – width and time on the ball – meant that the Epsom side was reinvigorated after the break. Unfortunately, Dulwich snuck a second goal from a corner just after half time. But then an unexpected Epsom comeback began.
Epsom managed to fight back against the tide, with captain Charlie Richardson (Rn) scoring. Christian Collier (P) equalised before Freddie Laflin (P) finished the opposition off in the dying moments of the game.
A wonderful team performance from the boys ensured that Epsom advances to the next round of the competition. Specific mention must go to Harrison Watts (P) for his work rate in the engine room of the midfield; Teddy Pople (P) for his excellent positioning in goal on a number of occasions, particularly to save a free kick in the second half with Epsom 2-0 down; and Sam Kirby (P) for his relentless attempts at holding up the ball to encourage the Epsom team to attack with purpose.
