Sport | Epsom College

Sport is for every pupil at Epsom, not just those competing at the highest level. It develops skills that complement those nurtured in the classroom, and instils qualities – such as teamwork, leadership and resilience – that benefit young people later in life.

Across 22+ sports, our coaching staff consists of former internationals and Olympians. They take as much satisfaction from a pupil’s personal victory (taking their first wicket, jumping a hurdle, trying a new sport) as from an A-team’s national title. Our aim is to remove every barrier to taking part, so that pupils develop a passion for sport regardless of ability.

22+ sports played against other schools
187 teams compete in over 1,500 fixtures each year
91% of all pupils play competitive fixtures

Rugby

Regularly competing at the top level, with national finals to our name, Epsom has long been known as a leading rugby school. We have strong links with Harlequins and London Irish, with a number of former pupils now playing professionally.

Paul Burke, our Director of Rugby, is a former fly-half of repute (international caps for Ireland, European Challenge Cup, European Cups, and Premiership titles).

While we hold our own in major tournaments, we take real pride in a programme fit for every boy and girl, whatever their level.

Hockey

The main sport for girls in the autumn, hockey is in the ascendancy at Epsom. With three teams reaching the semi finals  in 2024, and our U14 going on to win the Nationals title, it reflects the strength and depth across the age groups.

Money has been invested (not least in a floodlit, Olympic-grade astro) and a stellar line-up of coaches has been recruited, including specialist goalkeeping coach and Wales international Rose Thomas.

Football

One of Epsom’s newer sports, Football is now the major sport for boys during Lent Term. We recently welcomed our first Director of Football, Andy Parkinson, to the College and his five-year plan is to get Epsom College on the national stage and to strengthen Girls’ Football. This will be done by investing in coaching, video analysis, strength and conditioning and deepening existing links with Premier League academies and coaches at Chelsea and Brighton & Hove Albion.

We regularly field 25 teams across all age groups, and compete against leading football schools such as St Paul’s, Tonbridge, Radley and Brighton College.

Netball

Commonwealth gold medallist Eboni Usoro-Brown is our highest profile netballer, but by no means a one-off. Our pupils regularly represent at Surrey U13 and U15 Academies, and for Superleague franchises Surrey Storm and London Pulse at U17, U19 and U21.

The girls play netball throughout the year, but as the main sport during the Lent Term. Your daughter will be coached by an outstanding team, led by Surrey Storm’s Head Performance Coach, Beverley Bostock, who is also one of the coaches in England’s Netball Performance Coach Development Programme. In addition, this autumn we are proud to announce our new Director of Netball, record-breaking Mikki Austin, who joins us from Surrey Storm and further strengthens our netball provision.

Cricket

Cricket is enjoying a renaissance at Epsom. With first-class coaching throughout the winter and summer months, we encourage participation at all levels, driving up the quality of girls’ cricket and instilling a winning mentality among the elite. In 2024, we saw our U17 girls and U13 boys play brilliantly, both winning the Nationals and our U17 boys are through to the final in September.

Director of Cricket, Damian Shirazi, leads a team of top coaches with a focus on cementing Epsom’s place as a leading cricketing school for boys and girls. This is done in conjunction with Matt Homes, whose In-Touch Cricket Academy is based at the College.

In the past four years, Cricketer magazine has ranked Epsom among the UK’s top cricketing schools.

Athletics

Fully co-educational and one of the College’s strongest sports, pupils hit the track and field during the Summer Term. We take part in a number of prestigious events against some of the country’s top schools, notably the Copenhagen Shield where we compete against Wellington, Brighton, Marlborough and Dulwich; and the Lord Burghley match, hosted by Eton.

Coaching is provided by former internationals and current GB athletes with Commonwealth and Olympic experience. And many of our pupils are set to follow in their footsteps – representing at County and National level.

Golf

Golf has never been as strong at Epsom. Winners of the prestigious Smarden Bell – which pits the UK’s strongest golfing schools against each other – and 2022 National finalists. Furthermore, 2024 saw Year 11 Kris Kim compete on the world stage in the PGA Tour and continue on to the British Masters. It’s safe to say that the future looks bright for golf, with our top players competing against golfers several years their senior.

We have a three-bay driving range on site, we neighbour Epsom Downs Golf Club, and have strong links with Walton Heath Golf Club, home of the 2018 British Masters.

Squash

Emerging as one the country’s top squash schools, in 2024 all our teams reached the Nationals, with three teams winning first place. Throughout the age groups we’re competing on the top circuit, with four pupils playing for their countries.

The ambition is for Epsom to continue to cement its place in the upper reaches of school squash, and turn out leading international players for years to come.

Target Rifle Shooting

Epsom is the number one school in the country for shooting. The College team were crowned Cadet Target Rifle National Champions in 2021; and we are currently the top-represented school in the UK squads at U17 and U18 level.

The present-day success reflects Epsom’s history as one of the country’s premier shooting schools, winning the national championships (The Ashburton Shield) a record 15 times.

These achievements are built on the foundations of a top-class coaching team and excellent onsite facilities, which include our own indoor target rifle range.

Participation Sports

In addition to those sports listed above, there a numerous others available to our pupils.
