Drama | Epsom College

Drama holds a special place in the hearts of everyone at Epsom. Throughout the year – whether in academic lessons, co-curricular clubs and productions or house-based events – drama entertains, educates and enlightens. Our pupils take centre stage and work wonders backstage to ensure that drama remains one of the most cherished aspects of College life.

Showstoppers

We stage four major productions each year, which provide pupils with the opportunity to perform on stage or take part as a member of the band for musical theatre performances. For those who enjoy working behind the scenes, production roles are plentiful – including stage managers, costume designers, sound technicians, lighting and special effects operators, props and set designers.

Every Year 7 pupil participates in a weekly Performing Arts Carousel over the course of the year, they all perform in their Summer Performing Arts Showcase. Pupils in Year 8 and 9 have the chance to be in the Junior Production, and pupils from Year 10 to Year 13 can choose from the annual Senior Play and Senior Musical.

These productions are large scale with close to 300 pupils in total involved across the year. Performances take place in front of sell-out audiences – including matinees for local schools.

Cultural Highlights

The development of skills, such as collaboration, confidence and creativity, is a crucial part of the dramatic process, and we encourage this further through clubs, theatre trips and a programme of drama workshops, often involving visiting professional practitioners. GCSE and A-level pupils also have the opportunity to sample the theatrical delights of New York on an exciting biennial trip.

We support pupils in their application to prestigious organisations, such as National Youth Theatre, and have an excellent track record of success in LAMDA examinations (Acting, Reading for Performance or Public Speaking).

As well as gaining places in the National Youth Theatre and performance opportunities at Edinburgh Fringe with the Young Pleasance, our pupils have taken roles in West End plays such as Moana, and on major TV dramas, including The Crown.

Clubs & Societies

Right from the start of Year 7, all the way to the Upper Sixth, there are clubs and societies that will deepen our pupils’ love of theatre and performance.

Aspiring stage designers and technicians can sign up for Junior or Senior Theatre Design and Tech Club, while those wanting to expand their performance skills and experience can take part in Junior Drama Club. The clubs for younger pupils are often led or assisted by senior Drama students, which helps to build confidence and foster strong bonds between pupils of different ages and abilities.
