Public Examinations Handbook for Parents and Pupils
Public examinations are important. Preparing for, and sitting them, is a stressful time for pupils and parents. To minimise any problems, and to ensure the integrity and effective running of the examinations, the College must follow clear regulations as set out by the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ).
This handbook provides information about examination procedures, answers some of the most frequently asked questions and helps to guide and support both pupils and parents through the examination process. It also contains some formal notices and directs you towards the details of appeals procedures that are required by regulation to be given to each candidate. It is essential that all candidates read and understand the official documents that form the appendices to this booklet.
Queries About Grades
If you have queries or concerns about your grades, your teachers, Housemasters or Housemistresses are available to offer you advice and support. Mr Towers, the Examinations Officer at Epsom College, and Mrs Manson, the Deputy Examinations Officer, can be contacted at will.towers@epsomcollege.org.uk and kerri.manson@epsomcollege.org.uk or on 01372 821295.
Reconsidering your next steps
If your results have caused you to think again about your next steps you may speak to either Mr Conway for careers and higher education advice at charles.conway@epsomcollege.org.uk, or Mrs Brown to discuss A-level options at rebecca.brown@epsomcollege.org.uk.
Requesting a review
If you wish to have your exam papers reviewed, you must be aware that your mark may go down as well as up. It is worth checking that the grade you have been awarded is sufficiently close to the grade above to make a review worthwhile. Before submitting your request, please ensure you have spoken to the Head of Department or Mrs Brown.
A-level students are able to request a photocopy of their paper, which can help you to decide whether to proceed with a review.
To request a copy of your paper please send a completed request form to Mr Towers/Mrs Manson in the Examinations Office no later than 9am, 22 August (for A-level exams). The exam boards aim to send the A-level script by 29 August, allowing you time to consider whether to proceed with a review.
Deadlines for GCSE and non-priority applications is 9am on 26 September. The examination boards do not accept late requests.
All requests for review must be processed through the College. Please note that we cannot send letters of concern in support of individual candidates to the exam board.
To process an application for review we require:
- An enquiry form specifying the units to be reviewed, and the services you require. Subject and unit codes are listed on your results slip and are also available within the List of Entry Codes shown below. Please ensure that your name is on the form along with your candidate number.
- Payment for the review. Parents of GCSE students will have charges added to their School bill. Parents of A-level students can pay either by debit/credit card in person on the day (in The Mermaid) or by bank transfer. Overseas candidates can pay via Flywire. Please note that charges vary by exam board and for the service requested, full details are available below. If A-level grades are reviewed upward, payment is refunded by the exam board.
