Competing against peers from Epsom and Rosebery School, Ellie Jordan won the seventh Schools French Speaking Competition organised in partnership with the Epsom Rotary Club and the Epsom and Ewell Town Twinning Association.
Ellie explored the relevance of the 18th-century novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses to today’s society in a presentation that covered themes of control, manipulation and the power of language.
She was then able to show off her ability to extemporise by addressing three minutes of questions in French by the panel of judges. This gave her the opportunity to discuss the change in the power of the church and the way in which the naïveté of young girls portrayed in the book is not as common in today’s age.
Ellie’s presentation was praised for its detailed research and the quality of her spoken French, scoring full marks for pronunciation and delivery. She was awarded her prizes by the Mayor of Epsom.
