Christiana Kamdom Kemegne and Lucy Picken won the Year 12 South Central/East French Debating Competition held at Charterhouse School. There were nine other teams taking part in the competition, including Charterhouse, St John’s, Guildford High School and Reed’s.
Christiana and Lucy came top in their group and then beat St John’s in the semi-final. They faced a very strong Charterhouse team in the final, where the improvised motion was “Literature no longer serves any purpose”.
Christiana and Lucy were arguing for the motion, which would have been a wrench for them as they are both keen bibliophiles. However, they overcame their personal opinions to mount a very strong set of arguments, which were highly praised by the four judges.
