The 1st XI girls cricket side produced an impressive performance on Tuesday in the National Cup. Playing in the new ECB 100 ball competition the girls set about the new format in attacking style following the words of new head coach Mr Bew to the letter.
Having been drawn against previously unbeaten Framlingham the girls lost the toss and were asked to bat under cloudy skies. Captain Izzy Berry (M) and Kitty Ellis (Wh) got straight to work, scoring at an impressive rate.
With Berry often finding the boundary, Ellis played a more controlled tempo ensuring the partnership continued. As Epsom passed the hundred mark Berry (62) brought up her maiden Epsom half-century with a typically flowing cover drive. After a breakthrough, the now motoring Ellis was joined by Ella Clinton (Wh) who continued the high scoring rate. As Ellis passed her own half-century (75nt) Epsom finished the innings on a commanding 177-2.
In reply, Epsom bowled and fielded with superb focus and intensity. Georgie Jarvis Sobey (Cr), and Emma Tyson (R) held on to a series of excellent catches whilst the wickets were shared around Edie McLennan Fordyce (Rv), Madeleine O’Brien (Rv), Kitty Ellis (Wh), Florence Tanguy (Cr), and Ella Clinton.
Framlingham, despite containing a series of regional players, never found that key partnership and fell well short of the Epsom total.
With much of the side here for a number of years we look forward to them developing further and perhaps one day following in the footsteps of famous OE alumni Natalie Sciver and Alice Davidson-Richards.
