Middle Fourth pupil Theo Maxwell Randeria (H) is a cox for the Tideway Scullers School (TSS), who are currently competing in the Head of The Charles Regatta. Theo’s club is one of Britain’s most successful and has fed members through to represent GB at an international level every year since 1984. The boat coxed by Theo is really rapid – he has three GB J16 internationals on board.
The Head of The Charles Regatta (HOCR) began in 1965 and is one of the world’s most prestigious rowing events. It draws over 10,000 athletes and tens of thousands of spectators, making it the largest two-day rowing race in the world.
It is raced over the same October weekend every year and welcomes the best international crews, including various National Teams who compete in the Championship events.
The HOCR is raced on the Charles River, separating Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts. The course is 4.8km long and is renowned for being challenging to navigate (there are six bridges and numerous bends).
This year, it had to be a remote event, with crews racing globally over a distance of 4,702m: the distance any crew travels at the HOCR varies based on the line the cox takes down the course, so the race committee evaluated the distance of several different lines ranging from conservative to aggressive, and 4,702 meters was the most representative distance.
Theo and crew will be racing in the Men’s Youth Eights category. The course record for this category is currently held by St. Paul’s School (local rivals of TSS) in a time of 14:12.127 set in 2017.
