Over the Christmas holidays, Epsom College squash players competed at the highest level in international squash tournaments.
Four young Epsom players qualified for the prestigious British Junior Open, which was held in Birmingham this year. The tournament, featuring over 600 of the best junior squash players from all over the world, is generally considered to be second only to the World Championship in terms of importance, history and prestige.
Third Form pupil Ronnie Hickling (Wa) finished an impressive 20th place in the U13 event, despite returning from a recent injury and playing boys in the year-group above, winning three matches and losing three.
Lower Fourth pupil Luke Camfield (GH), also performed admirably, placing 43rd out of a draw of 128 boys in the U15 event, playing boys almost two years older; Luke also won three matches and lost three.
Epsom’s first seed, Fifth Former Stan Tanguy (G), also competed well against older boys in the U17 event, winning two matches to finish 75th, which was especially impressive given that this was his first appearance in the British Open.
Stan’s sister, M4 pupil Flo Tanguy (Cr), also played in the tournament for the first time, displaying the huge improvements she has made this year by competing with the world’s best U15 girls, finishing 59th and winning one of her matches 3-0.
Stan Tanguy (G) and Flo Tanguy (Cr) also played in the Scottish Open in December, another high-level tournament attracting many top young players. Stan was particularly successful in this tournament, finishing 11th in a draw of 32 players in the U17 age-group.
