Charity Week 2019 got off to a cracking start with a fast-paced and competitive Teachers vs Pupils Quiz on Monday night, hosted by Mr Henson, with all proceeds going to support The Children’s Trust.
Teacher teams, Mr Hibbitt and Ms St Clair-Ford; former champions Mr Drinkall and Mrs Drinkall; Mr Pearce and Mr Wallace; and Mr Reeve and Miss Saul, competed against pupil teams Aadham Ahmad and Theo Dudley (F); Fraser Spalding and Solomon Ekoku (Fa); Will Page and Bertie Bamber (Fa); Meely Thesiger and Lara Mully (R); and Lucy Curtis and Issy Blackburn (R).
In front of an audience of around 50 pupils and teachers, the Drinkalls and the Rosebery U6 team took an early lead but were ably challenged by the Fayrer U6 boys on general knowledge questions.
Eventually, the competition came to a head in a sudden death round between Ms St Clair Ford and Mr Hibbitt, and Mr Pearce and Mr Wallace. The tiebreaker question asked the teams to estimate the size of the crowd at the England v Scotland Six Nations match.
Mr Pearce and Mr Wallace slightly edged it with an answer of 81,000, making them the Quiz Champions for 2019. (The correct answer was 82,000).
Happily, this fun event garnered approximately £140 in support of The Children’s Trust.
Great Epsom Bake Off
Tuesday saw the final of the Great Epsom Bake Off. Champion cakes from every House were on display in the Dining Room, and what a display they made.
The contest was adjudicated by Epsom’s Head Chef, and experts from the Catering department, who commented that the quality of cakes was “exceptional” this year. They looked beautiful and tasted delicious. Prizes went to:
- Overall Winner: Emily Lawrence (M)
- Presentation: Giles Malone (P)
- Texture: Emily Vandrau (R) and Maddie Wearne (Cr)
- Flavour: Tom Stoney (Fa)
And the judges added: ‘Very impressive cakes!’
A huge well done to the winners, and a big thank you to all of the House champions for contributing cakes. Of particular note were the impressive M4 entries this year. As the judges said: “very impressive cakes”.
Chapel Sermon
On Wednesday, the Charity Committee delivered a Chapel Sermon about the importance of recognising our privilege and using that privilege to help others both locally and internationally.
The six students – Anna Kontsareva (Cr), Elisabeth Phizackerley (Cr), Freddie Mills (H), Shiva Sadhu (F), Sara Akhmetova (Wh), and Rose Ewins (Rv) – also thanked the Epsom community for their participation in all of the big and small charity drives throughout the year.
Krispy Kremes
On Thursday, pupils and teachers enjoyed Krispy Kremes in Houses and in the Lower School, contributing money to The Children’s Trust – a delicious fundraiser which raised nearly £350.
Charity Fair
The Charity Fair was a great success with an impressive total of £817 raised. Each house, and for the first time, the Lower School, ran a booth completely of their own design.
Firm favourites were the White House hair and make-up booth, the Robinson ‘Coke Float’ booth, Raven’s MarioKart stand, the Lower School Charity Reps’ Sweet Shoppe, and Forest’s Malteser Run.
The event in the Sixth Form Centre proved to be a fun afternoon for staff and pupils alike, with Mrs Skipper, Mr Gillespie, Mr Pearce and Mr Singh all getting involved in the various offerings.
The Houses who raised the most were:
3rd place – Crawfurd House’s Sweet Pong Game – £68.58
2nd place – White House’s Hair Styling and Face Painting Booth – £95.45
1st place – Murrell House’s Brownie Booth – £113.50
Thanks to pupils, staff and parents for your wholehearted support of Charity Week. From joining a quiz team, to baking and sampling cakes, to participation in the Charity Fair, so many got involved to make it a true whole-school effort.
Delightfully, we raised:
MONDAY Teachers vs. Pupils Quiz – £140
TUESDAY Great Epsom Bake Off Final – £66
THURSDAY Krispy Kremes – £350
FRIDAY Charity Fair – £817
In all, we raised £1371 for The Children’s Trust last week. Well done and a huge thank you.
