The senior Rugby Sevens squad had their first outing of the season at Seaford College on Sunday. Epsom got off to a flying start in their opening game, beating the hosts Seaford College 26-7. This was followed up by two comprehensive victories over Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood 49-0 and Emanuel School 44-0.
Playing some impressive sevens in their opening three matches, Epsom finished top of their pool and progressed through to the Cup semi-final where they faced the winners of Pool 2, Bishop Wordsworth’s School. A far sterner test this match turned out to be, and despite a late score by Bishop Wordsworth’s, Epsom controlled large parts of this game and fully deserved their 19-12 win.
This set up a final against Dulwich College, who had comprehensively won their semi-final against New Hall School.
Trailing 7-0 at half time, Epsom created a number of opportunities but were unable to break down a resolute Dulwich defence. The semi-final win seemed to takes its toll on our players and a late score from Dulwich sealed their win. Despite the loss, the 7s played over the course of the day was excellent and the signs look encouraging for a successful season. Epsom’s next tournament is at Portsmouth Grammar School on Sunday.
