Ensembles from Across the College Take to the Stage

A packed Big School was treated to a feast of music at the annual Ensembles Concert

The Symphony Orchestra opened the evening with a captivating performance of the second movement of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Andante Cantabile, under the direction of Mr Freddy Wickham, Assistant Director of Music. The Senior Concert Band, conducted by Mr Paul Johnson-Hyde, Director of Music, followed with wind band favourite, Coates’ Dambusters March and an atmospheric rendition of Ancient Airs of Ireland by Michael Sweeney.

The Lower School Orchestra performed movements from the famous the Lord of the Rings Suite, while the Junior Blues ensemble entertained with their lively performances of One Note Samba by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

The Funk Band impressed with their energetic renditions of Luther Vandross’ Never Too Much and Jocelyn Brown’s Somebody Else’s Guy. The Acapella group gave a particularly polished rendition of Sabrina Carpenter’s Please, Please, Please, while the Barbershop group delivered a rousing performance of Jordan & Austin’s Is You Is or Is You Ain’t.

The enjoyable evening concluded with an impressive performance by the Big Band, featuring Ellington’s Take the A Train and Goodman’s Swingtime in the Rockies.

Director of Music, Paul Johnson-Hyde said: “The Ensembles Concert was a magnificent showcase of the breadth and depth of musical talent at the College and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the pupils and their teachers”.
