Lights, Language, Action: Linguists Examine I Cento Passi

This week, Epsom's linguists were invited to Bristol University’s exploration of I Cento Passi (Giordana, 2000).

The session began with an in-depth look at the historical context of 1950s, 60s, and 70s Italy, a period marked by pervasive mafia control. This backdrop set the stage for a deeper understanding of the film’s narrative and themes.

Students delved into the characterisation within the film, examining how the setting and era influenced the characters’ development and actions. The exploration extended to the director’s film techniques, highlighting how cinematography, lighting, and sound were used to enhance the storytelling.

An interactive component allowed pupils to draw parallels between I Cento Passi and other films with similar themes. This comparative analysis helped them apply their existing knowledge to new contexts, fostering a richer appreciation of the film. Linguists came away from the evening with not only a review of a language outside of their current studies, but also a comprehensive understanding of I Cento Passi and its place within the broader landscape of Italian cinema.
