Virgin Atlantic Pilot Inspires Pupils with Insights into a Career in Aviation

Virgin Atlantic pilot, and former Epsom pupil, Anthony McGhee (Holman 2004-09) shared insights with pupils into the rigorous training process and pathways to a career in aviation

Having trained in Spain, Anthony began his career with Ryanair before advancing to Norwegian and ultimately securing a position with Virgin Atlantic. He detailed the demanding nature of pilot training, which includes extensive classroom lessons, flight simulations, and accumulating flying hours. One particularly challenging exercise involves flying blindfolded, relying solely on instruments for navigation. The role combines technical skills with people management, as pilots work closely with colleagues across airspaces to navigate challenges.

Bringing the role to life, he shared both the exhilarating experiences and the challenges that come with the profession. He highlighted the dedication pilots have to aviation, as well as their responsibility for passenger and crew safety.

For pupils eager to explore this career path, Anthony recommended following Captain Chris on Instagram for an inside look at a pilot’s daily life. He also noted that now is a great time to pursue pilot training, as retirements and a pandemic-related pause in training have led to a growing demand for new pilots.

Pupils can learn more about pilot training opportunities at Pilot Careers Live next month.

A big thank you to Anthony for visiting and offering such an engaging and insightful presentation, inspiring the next generation of aviators.
