Students Smash Their English Speaking Board (ESB) Exam

Two of our Lower Sixth students, Callie Tuen-Muk and James Wylezek, recently undertook their ESB Level 3 Certificate in Speech (Grade 8) examination and achieved exceptional awards of Distinction and Merit+.

The English Speaking Board (ESB) Grade 8 qualification is a key component of the College’s Core English course, designed to enhance and develop essential transferable English skills. This qualification not only promotes oracy but also sharpens presentation and performance abilities – valuable skills both now and in the future.

This challenging exam requires pupils to deliver three distinct presentations to a discussion group and an external examiner. Their tasks included:

  • A five-minute, research-based presentation on a topic of their choice.
  • Leading a discussion on issues raised by a recent newspaper article.
  • Presenting a literary recommendation and performing a recital from a chosen piece of literature.

Both Callie and James worked hard to refine their presentations and should be immensely proud of the progress they have made.

A special thank you also goes to their supporting discussion group – Bella Pinnes, Iustina Bogdan, and Ada Ucuncu – who contributed thoughtful and challenging questions, allowing Callie and James to showcase their skills in real-time discussion.
