Senior members of the Cabinet Office and Civil Service, shared fascinating insights into careers at the heart of Government. The panel included Evlambios Christophi, an Old Epsomian and Head of Digital Communications at the Department for Work and Pensions; Barry Hooper, Director of the Government Commercial Function Office; Ayesha Carmouche, Campaigns and Strategy Lead at the Cabinet Office; and Faisal Khalil, Digital Programme Manager, also at the Cabinet Office. They provided lively, engaging, and often humorous responses to questions from the audience.
The speakers highlighted the Civil Service’s dynamic nature, emphasising its innovative approaches and departure from traditional stereotypes. Evlambios Christophi shared his experiences leading a team of 23 to create viral content for government campaigns, showcasing how creativity and leadership play pivotal roles in modern government work.
Barry Hooper, who transitioned from a finance career to government, urged students to “step outside their comfort zone.” His varied responsibilities have ranged from overseeing courts and prisons to purchasing supplies for judges, prisoners, and civil servants – to support the creation of the Infected Blood Compensation Authority. His message underscored the diversity and impact of roles within the Civil Service, and the ability to drive social and economic value across the UK.
They also shared insights into the prestigious Fast Track Stream, encouraging students to be resilient, as many successful candidates had faced rejections before securing a place.
The event left the audience inspired and better informed about the exciting possibilities of a career in public service.
