For some, this was their first conference, but all of Epsom’s delegates debated an array of pressing global issues with poise and professionalism, discussing topics such as the Kashmir region combatting poverty in Central Asia. The day buzzed with diplomatic energy as complex issues and passionate debate took place.
This conference was yet another huge success for Epsom’s MUN Society, with the College winning nine awards. Jasper Webb, Cedric Lee, John Gartside and James Mathews were awarded Outstanding Delegate in their respective committees, this being the highest award an individual can win at this conference.
Melissa Chee, Sasha Kryukova and Dejan Filipas earned Highly Commended Delegate for their passionate debate, while Isla MacGregor Watson and Ben Senior received special mentions for their strong participation. As a team, Epsom continued to impress, with their delegation (the USA), being awarded both Highly Commended Delegation and Best Delegation for their domination of the General Assemblies. This outstanding result is symbolic of the team’s hard work during the conference and their passion for international relations.
Jasper Webb reflected on the day, saying: “As a first-timer in the Environmental Committee, I was amazed by the energy and teamwork. It was challenging but inspiring to work on real-world issues with people who are just as passionate about making a difference.”
The conference provided the opportunity for Epsom’s students to test their debating skills beyond the Society’s meetings. Within committees, our delegates worked hard to defend the USA’s stance on many challenging issues, broadening the perspectives of all involved. In the General Assembly, the team collaborated to propose a resolution aimed at achieving world peace, skillfully negotiating with other countries to gain support. Epsom’s success was the perfect conclusion to a day marked by individual achievements as well as team success. The team hopes to continue this at their next conference at Benenden School in December.
