The Bourne-Epsom Protocol – Pioneering ‘AI in Education’
In a groundbreaking step for the future of education, Epsom College joined forces with the Bourne Education Trust (BET) to launch the ‘AI in Education’ initiative. Spearheaded by Richard Alton, Epsom’s Deputy Head of Digital Education, and Chris Goodall, BET’s Head of Digital Education, this initiative aims “to ensure that AI will maximise the interests of all involved in education, pupils, teachers, support staff, parents, governors and the wider community”. The project was unveiled at Epsom’s inaugural Conference on AI in Education in May 2023, which cemented the College’s status as a leader in educational innovation.
A Dynamic Partnership with Bourne Education Trust
Epsom College’s relationship with the Bourne Education Trust (BET) extends far beyond AI. BET, which encompasses 23 academies and three associate schools across Surrey, Hampshire, and Richmond, has opened doors for Epsom staff to collaborate and grow. After productive exchanges between senior staff from Teddington School (a BET member) and Epsom College, an exciting opportunity emerged: Epsom teachers will complete their ITT second school placements at Teddington. Additionally, Teddington teachers have been invited to participate in the ‘Aspiring Middle Leaders’ course hosted by Epsom and a number of surrounding schools – fostering leadership skills and encouraging ongoing collaboration. This partnership will continue to strengthen teaching practices and educational experiences for both institutions.
Collaboration with LEO Academy Trust – Leading Digital Learning
LEO Academy Trust, with its nine primary academies and over 4,600 pupils, has established itself as a leader in digital education through its ‘Pedtech’ approach, which ensures each pupil has access to a personal device. Senior staff from Epsom College and LEO Academy exchanged visits throughout 2024, exploring opportunities to support each other’s unique strengths. Epsom teachers now have access to the expertise of LEO’s educators in digital learning, while LEO’s pupils and teachers gain from Epsom’s Drama and Music masterclasses – a partnership that promises rich creative and academic benefits.
Celebrating Community Connections
Epsom College’s commitment to community service is as strong. Through partnerships with St Martin’s Church, Epsom pupils participate in Evensong services, deepening ties with the local faith community. Meanwhile, the College’s Service Programme actively involves pupils in volunteering at local primary schools and elderly care homes, promoting empathy and a sense of responsibility. Other community-focused initiatives include visits to the Maggie’s Cancer Centre and the Royal Marsden Hospital, offering pupils an opportunity to connect with patients.
Epsom College also makes its Chapel available for local primary schools’ prizegiving ceremonies, and through its work with the Royal SpringBoard Foundation, helps extend educational opportunities to pupils from a variety of backgrounds. These partnerships reflect Epsom College’s dedication not just to its pupils but to the entire community, providing a rich blend of academic, cultural, and social contributions.
