Martin Nutt was born on Good Friday, 1938, and died on 25 May 2023 aged 85. After National Service in the RAF, he went up to Cambridge in 1958 to read Natural Sciences. He always claimed that the German for Scientists that he learnt in school wasn’t terribly helpful in his studies or subsequent career in the BBC, but came in handy on a family holiday when we visited a salt mine in Austria. He worked in the BBC Designs Department building innovative technological gadgets and then in Health and Safety.
Martin was a local councillor for 16 years, where he was mostly interested in libraries and education. He served on the governing boards of various educational establishments, including the Court of the City of London University. He also served on the Board of the Lee Valley Park Authority.
He helped his mother edit and write a book about his father’s wartime experiences, based on his diaries, called A Soldier at Sea. His father was also an OE and was in the Royal Army Medical Corps.
Martin’s retirement consisted of joining and using as many specialist libraries as possible. A real polymath, you never knew what his latest interest would be. Martin was much loved and will be missed. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sam, and two daughters, Lucy and Emma.
