Art
On Monday, budding artists from local Prep and Junior schools enjoyed a day-long Art Masterclass at Epsom College. Focusing on the work of John Piper, one of our famous former pupils, the Year 5 boys and girls explores the College’s grounds, including the Chapel. They took notes, made observational drawings, and collaborated to create large-scale mixed-media pieces inspired by Piper’s work. Head of Art, Nikolas Arvanitis, praised the children’s focus and effort, which he said was reflected in the quality of the work they produced.
Thank you to the following schools, and their young artists being such wonderful guests: Banstead Prep, Rowan Prep, The Hawthorns, Tower House, West Ashtead Primary,
Creative Writing
The day after Surrey’s young Picassos joined the College, pupils from three other schools took part in our Creative Writing Masterclass. Pupils enjoyed reading a selection of short stories from the humorous to the horrible, and then embarked upon cutting these tales up so that they could rearrange the pieces into their own new narratives.
These ‘Frankenstein’ stories soon took on a life of their own in the creative hands of these young writers. Pupils worked both as a team and individually to explore the world of creative writing, and the results were a host of unique reinterpretations of the original stories.
Many thanks to the boys and girls of Broomwood Girls’ Prep, Kew Green Prep, Warren Mead.
U11 Football Tournament
Finally, this week was rounded off in fine style with the much-anticipated U11 Football Tournament, with 24 teams competing for various awards.
Wonderful sportsmanship was on show throughout the day. Congratulations to Parkside who were the overall winners, beating Finton House in an exciting final.
Thank you to the many parents who cheered the teams on from the sidelines and enjoyed an al fresco lunch with us afterwards. Director of Football, Andy Parkinson, said: “What a fantastic morning of football. It was so good to see over 200 pupils out enjoying their football and playing the matches in the right spirit. The games were played with a great tempo and with excellent quality, which is testament to the approach that the players and coaches took to the morning. The tournament is always a highlight of my year!”
