OE Richard Pusey (Forest, 1960-1965) led his third annual guided walk for OEs through London on Tuesday 14th May.
The walk started at St Paul’s Underground station, with the first stop at St Paul’s churchyard to look at the site of Paul’s Cross. It was here that sermons were preached from, often resulting in catastrophic consequences to the preacher!. OEs then proceeded to look at Paternoster Square and Temple Bar, before visiting the Royal College of Physicians, where Anatomy teaching in the 18th Century was discussed. En route to the dreaded Newgate Gaol, Richard described the history behind this gory location.
OEs then had a look at the watch house at St Sepulchres before reaching St Bartholomew’s Hospital to study the Gibbs buildings. Richard explained points of interest in Smithfield Square before looking at the ancient parish church of St Bartholomew the Great where the group paid their respects to Rahere in his tomb.
Following the tour, OEs enjoyed a well earned lunch in The Butchers Hook & Cleaver, Smithfield.
