This week Epsom hosted two of its most cherished Prep School events, celebrating the academic talents of Year 5 pupils from across Surrey and South London.
Maths Challenge
13 schools took part in the annual Prep School Maths Challenge, hosted by Epsom’s Head of Maths, Mr Nick Carpenter. 52 pupils, from Banstead Prep, Broomwood Girls, Broomwood Boys, Eaton House Boys, Hampton Prep, Homefield, Hornsby House, Newland House, Old Vicarage, Prospect House, The Study Prep, Thomas’s Clapham and Willington pitted their wits against each other.
The challenge included a group round, a logic and problem-solving round, followed by the much-anticipated ‘maths relay’ round. This saw schools racing from one side of Big School to the other to get their questions and submit their answers.
Once all the brows had unfurrowed, and the answers had been submitted, the scores were totted up and Homefield Prep emerged the victors for the third year running, with Hornsby House and Hampton Prep taking the next two places on the podium. Congratulations to all the schools for making the event so competitive, and – most importantly – fun.
Public Speaking
The Maths event was followed by another firm favourite: the annual Prep School Public Speaking Competition.
In front of a packed audience of teachers, parents, Epsom College staff, and fellow Prep School pupils, teams of three were given five minutes to speak on a subject entirely of their choosing.
Each team was comprised of three speakers. The Chair, who introduced the speech; the Main Speaker, who expanded on the topic; and the Vote of Thanks who brought the team’s ideas to a conclusion.
Broomwood Girls, Ewell Castle, Falcons School, Greenfield, Kew Green Prep, Newland House, Rokeby, Surbiton Girls’ Prep, Ursuline Prep and Weston Green all took part, submitting strong teams who spoke on a range of fascinating subjects.
Talks included Don’t Call Me Lazy – I’m Being Creative; 7.5 Things To Do Whilst Brushing Your Teeth; and Who Chained The Dogs Up?
The winning talk was delivered by Ewell Castle (pictured) who explored Dice or Controller – Which One To Pick Up? Congratulations to Theo, Isabelle and Joshua for enlightening and entertaining the audience in equal measure.
